The inner hippie
26 01 2009
For years, I have made fun of my mom for being a hippie. She's the most likely person I know to do things like buy multiple pairs of birkenstocks, and show up to work wearing a flowey skirt and peasant shirt. While she was born in the 60's, she would have fit in better if her formative years had actually been in the 60's, instead of the 70's.
That being said, I've made two major steps towards embracing my inner hippie in the past week. First off, Maria went to MN, and brought back two solid shampoo bars from Lush. I love these for a few reasons. They require no packaging, so there's nothing to be recycled in the end, they last as long as a bottle and a half of regular shampoo, and they are 100% vegetarian, which means that none of the chemicals that irritate my psoriasis get anywhere near my skin.
This morning, I got notice of a partner yoga class from the yoga academy that I had been attending in the past. As usual, I IMed Heath to make sure he wanted to go, and then signed us up. The lead instructor at my yoga academy emailed me back to tell me that we were in, and then asked me if I wanted to sign up for the yoga instructor training course. Both my coworker and her husband had taken this course during it's first session, and loved it. I started thinking about it, knowing how much they paid, and knew that it would be a good idea. I asked for more information, only to find out that the class had gone up in cost by nearly double a month. This had me taken aback, but after discussing it with everyone who would be interested, and really nailing out my finances, I knew that taking the class would be the right decision for me. I am fascinated by everything under the sun when it comes to yoga, and there are a lot of people that take the course in order to further their yoga mastery--I intend to fall more under this category, than to become a steady instructor. I expect to learn a lot of things, both about myself, and about yoga, and to improve my health more than I already have. All in all, I'm looking forward to the experience, but if you had told me two years ago that I'd be using solid shampoo to minimize environmental impact, and taking coursework to become a yoga instructor, I would have laughed until I was blue in the face. Now? It's not so bad.
